Text messaging cabbies fight crime
- Police and cab drivers are teaming up to text messaging in an innovative project to
fight crime.
- The way in which the system works is by allowing officers to get details such as,
Descriptions and relevant details about the crime, to cabbies in towns and cities soon
after the crime.
- Metropolitan police commissioner Sir John Stevens said; This will put dozens of extra
pairs of eyes and ears on the streets.
- The system works by an officer attending a scene of crime for the first time, sending
the details to a central messaging Bureau.
- Tony Ellis, from com cab Plc drivers and operations manager for Taxi Marshals said :
“ cab drivers are just glad to help.
- Tony Ellis is also responsible for setting up many schemes in and around London which
involves safer travel at night, Cab watch and on street operations with various local
police stations.
- He has also been awarded two commendations from Westminster police and city of London
police.
